…some dance to forget.

“Some dance to remember, some dance to forget.” The Eagles, Hotel California

This line caught my attention this week as I listened to the song.  It is a poignant reminder about human behavior:  People often do the same thing, BUT for very different reasons.  It may look the same, but like tears, it is sometimes very hard to discern tears of joy, from tears of sadness or tears of relief.

Some dance to remember

We all carry wonderful memories. It is important to take time to remember good times.  Rituals and traditions are great ways to recall the past. Great memories serve to remind us how things can be and encourage us.  We all have good memories.  Find a way and the time to reflect, be thankful and to enjoy them.

Some dance to forget.

We also all carry painful memories; things we just as soon forget or not think about.  Having a healthy escape or way to cope is important.  Even temporary respites from pain help us recharge and continue on. If the memory is still fresh, remember time has a way of healing and putting all things in context.  Distractions give us time to let time do its work.

This is all a reminder to not be too quick to judge others. Every behavior serves a purpose for people, whether consciously or unconsciously.  We are all doing the best we can with what we’ve got.  Remembering that may allow us to give an extra helping of grace to the next person.
